Another Part of Me

10/25/2010 "Another Side of Me" What's up world? I hope everyone is doing well and living their life to the fullest. If you haven't already, go check out the newest sketch from the Pick 6 crew, "Blockers Insurance". We've all had that moment when we've been attempting to get quality time and someone kept interrupting. Well we've got the insurance for that now (click  here  to see the commercial). I really had a topic I wanted to drop, but I will save that for the next blog. For now, sit back and enjoy a little rhyme I wrote. No matter how close we are, it feels like you evade me/ Suburban Black kid, you just don’t relate to me/ And that’s how it go, my own hood don’t relate to me/ Feeling out of this world; my crib’s outer space to me/ Maybe that’s why when I get “"Sirius”"/ You look at me funny, like I’m reciting “Delirious”/ Not Eddie with the jokes, but you can come in my America/ But why I gotta be mackin to show I ai...

Starting Five (Originally posted on 10/14/2010)

Hello good people; I hope all is well. I want to add a quick disclaimer prior to the reading of this blog: I’m getting my boogie on right now. Don’t worry, it’s just practice. Any who, allow me to do my shout-outs: Shout out to “She She”, who I’ve never met but you seem cool; the Crump family (Mr. Crump, Mrs. Crump, and MACEO!); and finally people who brush their teeth twice a day. Don Ruiz's Five Agreements are tough to beat, like the starting five in South Beach. Today I want to share with you a few methods of gaining peace and success that I’ve recently been subjected to. In one of my many trips to Washington, I happened to hear about these tools of peace titled “The Five Agreements”, developed by author and New Age Spiritualism advocate Don Miguel Ruiz. The summary of his teachings are that we must remove ourselves from responsibility of other people’s problems and issues, giving us more time to develop ourselves as people of integrity and peace. Upon hearing t...

Chemistry (Originally posted on 10/11/2010)

Hello friends, how are you? I hope you experienced a fun productive weekend. Before I begin, I want to shout out a few good people: the frat brothers (Alpha Phi Alpha) from my home chapter, my good friends and sorority sisters Mikki, Crystal, and Imani, kids who listen to their parents, and my home girl Amanda. “Braceface”, you’re a bad girl. This weekend, I visited my alma mater, Cheyney University, the oldest historically black college in the nation, for Homecoming Weekend. The trip was filled with good friends and great times, but also opportunity to do a research project on the event. Yes, I get my investigation on. So here are my top three observations about homecoming, black college style: 1.        Older People Like to Wear Velour in 80⁰ Weather. In an amazing turn of events, the 50+ male demographic opted not to wear linen (their signature cloth) and selected velour from various early 2000s designers, including Sean John, Rocawear, Phat Far...

Dissecting the Baby Mama (Daddy) (Originally posted on 10/4/2010)

Ooh yeah! Ooh yeah! Ooh…sorry, practicing my Jodeci vocals; what’s going on everybody? I pray that everything is going well for you and yours.   A few notes before we begin: Redskins prevail again, so I must shout out Donovan McNabb (aka Run DMc) and the Redskins “Who You?” Nation. We don’t ask “Who Dat?” like the Saints fans.   When you come to our field talking nonsense, we say, “Who You?” Secondly, I want to say Happy Birthday in advance to my Dad, Charles Perry.   He exemplifies the terms manhood and fatherhood, and without him, I would not be able to introduce the Charles Perry Line of The Day. Occasionally we will bring in some of the highlights of my conversations with my father. So here’s Daddy on being the “cool guy”: “I told since you were younger, stop worrying about being the ‘cool guy’. Be smart, and you’ll be the cool guy’s boss. Remember his woman, the chick everyone was so hype over? She’s broke, beat-down, and has as many kids as she has teeth: 6. That’...

Did I Do That (A Bachelor's Deepest Thoughts) (Originally posted on 9/30/2010)

Hello everyone. I come to you with a heavy heart today, as I’ve learned of the loss of my great grandmother and family matriarch, Marion Hawkins. She’s been a great influence to me and many others; I actually named the fictional university in my novel “Homecoming” after her last name. You were a truly remarkable woman, and I pray that all that were touched by your spirit continue to display your teachings. Steven Q Urkel may have overdone it, but the brother cared. Today I chronicle my days as a bachelor. While a number of brothers enjoy the freedom and multitude of dating options, this guy prefers dating exclusively. The trust and consistent companionship are great, and the partnership aspect inspires me. As a result, I do my best writing in a relationship. Recently, however, my single status is intact, despite my best attempts to break free  J . My original hypothesis for my “singularity” was that, in comparison to many men my women of interest have dat...

Take 'Em to Church (Originally posted on 9/27/2010)

Hola, amigos; hope you all had fun, productive weekends, and that you got enough rest to get through the week. I got the chance to travel to one of my places, Washington, DC, and visit some family. Shout out to all my DC fam: Grandma Andrews, Aunt Peggy, Aunt Wanda, Serina and Glenn, and all my Hawkins, Carter, and Green crew. Also much love to my Skins fans and my girl Sharita aka Lois Lane. Now to the Bizness like Lil Wayne’s producer…In addition to visiting DC, the weekend also presented the opportunity to fellowship at one my lesser-known hot spots: Church. Now before you start “hating”, I want you to look at church a little deeper. Church offers many of the same thrills that we get from the club: Beautiful women (many of the same girls you danced with on Saturday), hot beats, (Kanye’s drum machine can’t hang with Pastor Marshall’s kids on the drums and organ), and a chance for to everyone to see you looking good. Shoot, I started wearing my skinny ties on Sundays. More important...

Grindin' (Originally posted on 9/23/2010)

What’s going on, team? Good to be back writing, and before I begin, let me take a moment to give just due to a few people. First, the father-son tandem of God and Jesus, ‘cause you know they’re bad; my family Mom , Dad, Dee, Malcolm, and Cam; Y.M.e?, The Pick 6 team, Alpha, AKAs (What up, Tiff?), and the entire Divine Nine (not the bougie ones, though; y’all gotta slow down). Last but not least, everybody that supports dreams, whether it be mine, your sibling’s, your boo’s, or what have you. Now today I wanted to get a few things off my chest (3 to be exact), so this blog won’t follow my usual structure, but will still maintain organization and order. The key to this rant I’m preparing to do is that we identify the solutions to these issues. So let’s get busy. 1.        Why are people so tough on blogs, threads, and social networks? I’ve been called an illiterate monkey on Youtube, told I was going to get “rolled on” on Facebook, and brothers plotted to ...

Ms. Independent is taking HGH (steroids) (Originally posted on 9/18/2010)

Hola, hola, hola…what’s going on? I apologize for the delay. I know it’s been a few days since we’ve talked; the mind needed to marinate. There has a been a number of issues circulating around my brain; pressure to write my next book, conflicts with work, and one many of us share, the everyday fight to reach financial stability and comfort. It’s safe to say most people are searching for a better quality of life (I’m about to BLOW UP!). But enough of the malarkey; let’s get to “The Real”. Over the past decade we have seen a dramatic increase in the promotion of the single women and their self-sufficiency. It’s amazing how time flies; next month will “commemorate” the 10-year anniversary of Destiny’s Child smash hit “Independent Women Part 1” (Part 2 has a little knock to it lol). Now, by no means are B, Kelly, and Michelle the first to discuss this premise of not needing the brothers; Singers such as Janet Jackson (“What Have You Done for Me Lately”), Gwen Guthrie (“Ain’t Nothing Going...

Death at a Television (Originally posted on 9/13/2010)

Back for round 4 and a lot has taken place in the past few days: We honored the memory of those lost on 9/11 ten short years ago, we kicked off another season of football (with my Skins taking down the Boys on NATIONAL TELEVISION), and celebrated the best in the music industry at the MTV Video Music Awards. I was tuned in to the Skins, so I missed the VMAs, but I was asked to watch the Drake performance and give my opinion. I’m not one to be real ignorant or overcritical in a field other my own. BUT…whatever move that was, that you did down the steps, don’t do that anymore. It looked like you were counting dance moves: “and 1, 2, 3…1, 2, 3…trying to look cool…1, 2, 3”. In situations like that Drizzy, just get a swag coach. Maybe you could find a swag double or something; I don’t know. Just don’t ever force my sugar mama Mary J. Blige to watch that malarkey EVER AGAIN. Now back to this blog thing: Family, I must say I’m UPSET. Not over anything serious; God is good (ALL THE TIME) and a...

Growing Into Your Championship (Originally posted on 9/12/2010)

What’s up, team? Here for round 3 and before I began, thanks to EVERYONE that takes a look at the blogs. I’m no big star just yet, and I know without a name, you really have NO reason to initially listen or watch anything I say or do. It is my sole intent, however, to do all I can to prove I’m worth your time, attention, and when Pick 6 blows up, your money! One of the ways I’ll do so is through this blog. My homies asked me to pour some of myself into the blog, so the people can relate (I can relate! Lol). Shout out to the Omega boy. Back to the task at hand. One of my new favorite commercials is the Foot Locker “Educators” spot including such pro athletes as New York Knicks forward Amare’ Stoudemire and track star Sanya Richards-Ross. They star as new professors at a school, solely there to stress hard work and dedication to training. My preferred spot, however, features New York Giants lineman Justin Tuck (previously featured singing and dancing in Subway commercials). In this comm...

Cooking Beef (Originally posted on 9/10/2010)

Hola, good people;     I hope your day is going well. I’m in a good mood. As I’m typing, I’m actually pop-locking (bet you didn’t know I was that talented). Lot of important things going on right now, but I believe it’s necessary to get this beef off my chest. By the way, beef brisket sounds disgusting. I heard somebody on the sitcom “The Game” say, “That’s why you smell like beef brisket.” Almost threw up. Any who…back to business; Trey Songz, I’m calling you out. That’s right, “Playa”, I said it. You out here trying to show out, and I’m not feeling it. My first point of beef: Calling yourself “Mr. Steal Yo’ Girl”. Really, Tremaine? That’s how you flow? So you mean to tell me when Pick 6 blows up (Check us out on Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/pick6time lol) I can’t bring my girl around you, or you’ll try to jack me? That’s messed up, homie, messed up. I recently read at Black Colleges the female to male ratio is 7:1 or something crazy like that. You better take your b...

In Living Color (Originally posted on 9/7/2010)

What's going on everybody? I decided to try something new, and see how it flows. My little brother "vlogs", and my sister has something in the works, so I figure it's my time to sample the sauce. This is my first blog, and I will title it, "Confessions of a Big Dreamer". Jacked Karinne Steffans there a little bit, but she made her paper already. Yesterday was Labor Day, the most ironic of days because we do NO work, and I continued to contemplate a very serious discussion I had with my mother, sister, and her two college friends. So, today's topic of discussion: The prominent black man, and his desires for women outside his race. Now, personal disclaimer: I love the sisters, but I wouldn't disrespect an interracial couple. Your decision is your decision. The true issue here is the great impact that interracial dating leaves on young African-American women. Fellas, If you ever want to see disdain, disgust, or any other word beginning with "d...

Facebook Gangster

What’s up everyone? It’s good to be writing to you today. This was a great weekend; Bandman and I performed a special taping of Pick 6 on Friday, and linked up with some future partners. Saturday I attended my “Numba’s” dinner party celebrating her birthday. Before I forget, let me shout out all the people that came through: Mikki Mouse, Imani, Cici (you’re wild), my Dean Wes, the Rob and Steff show, Bracy, and of course, my #2 (Hey, Baby Girl.) Since I’m in a good mood, let’s even shout out fake John Legend and his manager. Legend was trying to holla at everything moving; he even made a pass at me, but I don’t roll like that. Wow I don’t even know that guy.  Lord, forgive me. Onto the “real”; today I’m writing about another epidemic greatly impacting us, the Internet Gangster. Also known as the Facebook Thug, this heathen is a frequent visitor of your chats, inbox, and Honesty Box. They can be categorized under one of two species: The lover, who uses the web to try and get drawer...
