Can I Borrow Some Empowerment? The Never Ending Importance of Great Friends

" Friendship multiplies the good of life and divides the evil. " Baltasar Gracian Reunions carry a certain mystique. At high school and college reunions, alumni both accomplished and otherwise return to find the answer to a few questions: Did so and so get their life together? Is shorty still fine? Do they still call him " Pretty Ricky "? When classic bands reunite after years away from the spotlight, we all wonder do they still possess the voices and energy, or have years of partying, eating, and in-group fighting stripped away their allure. Needless to say I was extremely excited to reunite with my crew of best friends last weekend, known to people near and far as the Young Men of Empowerment (Excellence), "Y.Me".  Eleven years ago, 5 ambitions men (which grew to 6) from incredibly different backgrounds were brought together by competition, music, Black pride, and aspirations to be the best. Years and accomplishments later, we still come toget...

"Back to the Lab": Transition Smoothly Back Into School Mode

With the summer dwindling down and the nostalgia of being away from dorms wearing off, students are planning their return to school. It is a time of mental  and  physical  preparation; you must retrain your mind to study concepts, prepare to balance your studies and social life, and buy new clothes so that you're "killin' em" the first 3 weeks of class. In addition to looking fresh, each scholar has a number of goals and objectives to accomplish during the respective year, and it is truly important to get off to a great start in order to do so. Success, specifically great starts, are a result of preparation; as a great man once said, "Success is the sum of a preparation, faith, and opportunity. So with the opportunity to return to school, I have faith the following methods will help bring success  and put you in the place to be.  1. Bring in the Goal List What everyone's working for... We make lists for everything: grocery list, Christmas li...

The Golden Lords (My Alpha Memories)

Yesterday was the 105th anniversary of the founding of Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity, the oldest Black fraternity in the land. It gives me great pride to be a member of the "Black and Old Gold"; I was singing like Young Jeezy (105! Yeaaahhhhh, Shorty 105!) When I look back (over my life) and I think things over, I can (truly) say...that I've been blessed; I got a testimooonnny! Sorry, had to finish the line. Being serious, it's great being an Alpha; the fraternity has provided me so many opportunities, networks, and memories that I cannot find the words to fully express my gratitude. Among the values I just listed, perhaps the greatest benefit is the addition of 10 great men to my immediate family. In the fall of 2007, 11 men marched the campus of the oldest Black College in the nation and capped off a long and arduous journey to a enchanting destination known simply as the "House of Alpha". For each of us, it took great sacrifice; Rob, who overcame the strug...
