Not How It's 'Post To Be' (Being Accountable For What Our Music Says About Us)

"The beat is crazy though!" "This song just gets me hype!" In his 2004 comedy special "Never Scared", Chris Rock talks about growing tired of defending his beloved rap music. While highlighting the songs, he mention how fans of hip hop overlook how incredibly tasteless, misogynistic, and crude some of the lyrics are: While I laugh insanely at this clip and the special every time I see it, my recent involvement with music causes me to laugh to stop from crying (or the infamous, "ha hah...not really funny"). As I've grown older and have become more aware of the music and its ramifications, I can't just laugh it off. I can't just dance to this music because "the beat's hot" or "it's so catchy". I'm not grooving just because Chris Brown is on it anymore. I've supported Usher for years but bruh I DO mind. I mind that you're not pushing our women to have employment that speaks to their ...

You Must Be This Tall To 'Ride': The Life of the 5'10 and Under Brother

I'm not short. Well, by my standards. According to Wikipedia, the average height in the United States for males is 5'10. My height varies from 5'7 to about 5'10, depending on who I'm talking to. I'll throw 5'10 out as bait and see who bites, working my way back to my true height of 5'7. As most vertically challenged men will reiterate, being considered short is extremely difficult to compensate for. Jagged edge teeth? Braces or Invisalign will get you straight. Acne? Rick Ross would tell you very bluntly: Proactiv got that Justin Beiber, please believe ya . Follow the program and you're cleared up. There's a solution for many conditions, but height has yet to be countered.  For the brother listed at 5'10, consider yourself Lil' Wayne: excuse the poor English, but "y'all ain't got no worries ." Guys standing at 5'9 and under, however, have a little work on their hands. You have to be exceptional at the other ...

Ooh Yeah! Channeling Your Inner R&B Singer

When I retire from the television and film industry, I've decided to record an album as an R&B artist. Initially my plan was to form a group with Devyn and Garvin. We would kill "em", but I've seen every episode of Unsung and I don't want us to go out like The Temptations or Five Heartbeats. My aspirations may seem outlandish, but those familiar with the powers of rizzle and bizzle (rhythm and blues) understand the benefit of exercising your musical talent. History shows that there is a long standing intimate connection between women and singers. From Ron Isley to R. Kelly, Otis Redding to Omarion ( "Touch" O, not Maybach O), Rhythm and Blues crooners leave a special effect on the ladies, one CGI can't replicate.  As a young buck, wet behind the ears and seeking...the ladies, this fact did not sneak past me.  Let's not forget that my moniker "Ceddy P" is derived from the original drawers dropper, Teddy Pendergrass . In my brie...

Peace Out: Breaking Up With Class and Dignity

"That's passé." They'll have a song out soon. In my friend circle, we use this phrase commonly to highlight actions and behaviors that are frowned upon. An activity that would most CERTAINLY be considered passé here at Y.M.e? is the recent scuffle between  my light skinned twin Chris Brown (you know they call me "Chris Brown-skin") and his lighter counterpart, Drake. This nightclub...FIASCO is disheartening for several reasons. First, two light-skinned people shouldn't be fighting; it's counterproductive to y'all comeback and El Debarge would not appreciate it. Secondly, it's rumored that the fight surfaced over the two's previous involvement with a former flame, Ri-Ri. Now I know that Caribbean women are nice with it, but my Lord! It's NEVER to cool to fight over the past. If these claims are true, it leads me to back to the respective "break-ups" of these singing/rapping individuals with the previously menti...
