Boo-Ski Material

"It's real out here."

This is arguably the most common phrase you hear about life after school. As most college graduates/working people will attest, life becomes really interesting after college. Some people focus on the more difficult aspects: limited free time, minimal levels of energy, and the stalker. Many of us know this stalker; he goes  by the name "Bill" (Insurance Bill, Credit Card Bill, Cable Bill, etc.) Despite these trials, there are a lot of positive opportunities that open up from leaving school. In addition to building your career and making adult purchases, you make attempts at "streamlined" relationships.

Biz: Are they real or "Just a Friend"?
Streamlined relationships are situations that have more long-term potential as opposed to "it's Wednesday and I'm bored" dates. As one legendary philosopher (Biz Markie) said, "We started talking, getting familiar/Spending a lot of time so we can build a...relationship" (Beatboxing ensues.) Analyzing my past dating...wow just seen this dude digging up his nose while driving. You mad dirty, dog. Anyway, my past helped me see that when I know what I want, the dating is more clear. That doesn't mean better or worse, just clear lol. So I made a reference point, "Cool Traits in a Boo-Ski", and I use it to see if I made a "come-up" or should I come up out this situation.

Physically Attractive (Deeper)

I think most of us agree we want someone that we are physically attracted to; it's the first connection we make with a person. While the comment seems vain, the way a person looks carries a lot of weight. For me, being physically attractive is a combination of your God-given beauty and how you carry it. Do you dress well? Are soap, lotion, toothpaste, and deodorant a part of your daily regimen? Women who can balance sex appeal and class really strike a chord with me. While men have more leeway here, I hope many women desire a man who dresses well.

Nike Spokesperson

There are plenty of reasons why two people can't be together; she's Christian,  he's Muslim; one went to Cheyney University, the other went to Lincoln; he likes Popeye's chicken, she loves Bojangles.  There is one type of person, however, who transcends these types of issues: the Nike spokesperson. No matter how busy they are, how much they've been hurt in the past, or how bad their feet hurt, they "just do it". They find a way to spend time, talk on the phone, build special moments with you. It's so sexy when a person just makes it happen; it's a testament to their character and the feelings they have for you. I LIKE that.

Businessman

While it's great to spend time with your person of interest, it is also important to have your time apart. That's when you handle your business, and then you talk about it at the end of the day! If this is a person who has middle to long-term implications, you want to see them putting in some work towards a stable job or career. If I'm out working to see a better world, my girl can't be at home trying to see "A Different World" (Such a great show.) On the flip side, as a man, how do you look being home ALL day, your only skills being on Call of Duty? Better take your butt to Blockers.

Aptitude

Just please don't be dumb. Don't put your personal life on social networks. Don't steal. Don't pick your nose.

Beyonce (aka 1993 Scottie Pippen)

That's how me and the boo will be at Sixers games.
(We need a shooting guard!)
It's really cool when the person in your life enhances your image. You are fly on your own, but your boo makes you a powerhouse. In certain circles it's known as the "1993 Scottie Pippen", in reference to his influence on basketball legend Michael Jordan. Jordan is regarded as the greatest player of all time, but his success was greatly impacted by having "1993 Scottie Pippen" on his side. This era however relates easier to the Beyonce story. Beyonce is lauded for her talent, her drive, and her beauty by people of all ages, but I appreciate "B" for her contribution to her husband Jay-Z and the "Carter Administration". Jay-Z was already arguably the greatest rapper alive, but his union with the biggest diva in the game (and owning a clothing line and part of a basketball team) lifted him to icon status. Quite simply Jay, she helped "upgrade" you.

Grown

It's so refreshing to meet a woman who acts mature, who acts grown. Wearing Coach bags and red bottoms doesn't necessarily make you grown (Neither do cardigan sweaters, but they do help.) Grown can be defined as the ability to be open, honest, smart, and passionate. Being grown is tough; honestly, I still have it on layaway. Seeing a woman who can be real, and more importantly back up her words is a huge turn-on, and truly the essence of cool.

These are the six things that I really admire in a person I want to be with. Make a list for yourself and for kicks, see how it works for you. It's not a sign to marry or dump anyone; just to keep your love life in perspective. Later, good folks; Redskins won.

Comments

  1. lmao i feel like the nike spoke woman...had too many of these situations happen. at one point i use to think that if i was not economically stable i couldnt possibly have a successfull relationship. however the more mature i get the more i begin to realise that some relationships you find yourself in, open up quite a few doors for you...

"What's Up, Youngblood?": A Deeper Look At The Old School Player

They are found pretty much everywhere: at the supermarket, on the second floor at your job, and especially at family reunions. Though conspicuous in nature, this species is easy to spot. No I'm not talking about roaches, you heathen; I'm talking about the "Old School Player", aka a "piiimmmmp". Now it is important to differentiate between an Old School Player and a man who is simply "old school". My father, known affectionately as Charles Perry (please say the full name), is old school; he has traditional values, rough hands, and watches westerns like "Gunsmoke". An Old School Player (O.S.P) is different; they are commonly outlandish, shifty, and laugh really weird. These well-tenured romeos carry great influence on the youth of America, specifically young males. Coming into contact with old school playas brings guys to a critical transition in life: the older men become an example for their younger counterparts. Gentlemen decide f...

The Nice Guy Rules

"Nice guys finish last." What a hogwash statement. Seriously; it's baloney, maybe even pastrami. Through entertainment, business, and romance, the belief is that a man with etiquette and morals is one with diseases, like the measles or swine flu. When you turn on your television or read your news...kindle, you witness arrogant, womanizing egomaniacs praised as charismatic men with undeniable "swagger". Men who are interested in helping others and making people enjoy themselves are undervalued. The result is young men trying too hard. These men, known as "Nice Guys", are seen as sweet people who are great to know and make you laugh, but are OFTEN over looked for men who...use less effort to receive approval. As a teen and in my early college years, I played into this. It's such a weird feeling; you become enamored with doing right by people, as if it determines whether people will like you. Half the time, if you are "too" nice, peo...

I'm a Hater (Acknowledging Your Faults and Using to Reach Prosperity)

I, Cedric Charles Perry, am a hater. Whew...though it's tough to say, admission is the first step to recovery. It's a gene that has traveled throughout my family tree; my great-grandmother has been recognized as one of the more influential haters during the civil rights movement. My sister Dee actually holds the Pennsylvania state record for most consecutive statements using the word "corny", with 46. It appears that there are numerous types of haters; my type is called "Conditional Hater", where in attempts to create humor, I will break out in uncontrollable hating. Recognizing that this trait runs in my family, I was bound to be a hater and it's better for me to acknowledge this now and help others who share this condition. To better address this addiction, which currently affect approximately 3.6 million people in America (I made that number up), let's identify what hating is. Rapper LL Cool J once stated that hating is "identifying a perso...
